Your Brokerage Transition Playbook

Switching brokerages involves a lot of moving parts. Use this checklist to make sure nothing falls through the cracks.

Making a brokerage change is one of those decisions that affects nearly every part of your business — from your email address to your listing signs. I put this together so you have a clear, step-by-step roadmap. Some of these items need to happen before you tell your current broker you're leaving. Others can wait. The key is knowing which is which.

Before You Do Anything

Read your current broker/team contract carefully. Know what you agreed to — notice period, what business you can take, whether your CRM leads belong to you.
Have appropriate cancellations, new contracts, or addenda for current transactions ready before you make the move.

Forms & Licensing

Board of Realtors transfer forms
Local licensing body broker change forms
Broker transfer forms (what your old and new offices need to sign)
Change all required contact information and addresses with each body

Current Listings & Contracts

Confirm which current listings and buyers you are allowed to take
Have cancellation or assignment paperwork ready for anything that stays

Marketing Materials

Have new signs printed and ready — or get a temporary option from your new broker
Dispose of or return old signage
Order new business cards with updated info (this can wait a few weeks — no rush)
Update any flyers, print ads, or marketing pieces with required broker info and addresses (rules vary by market)
Update your resume with new contact info, office stats, and brokerage

Software, Tools & Database

Download your full database to a platform you own — a spreadsheet works perfectly. Do not leave your contacts behind in a broker-owned CRM.
Remove your personal sphere from any broker-owned CRM or database
Update MLS logins and business info
Update showing service logins and business info (e.g., ShowingTime)
Download any files from broker-owned document storage (Dotloop, Instanet, DocuSign, etc.) — your new broker may have tips on how to export before you give notice
Update Canva: saved logos and brand colors
Update email templates: any wording specific to your old broker or their processes, plus signature and contact info
